KNOW THE SYSTEM FIRST! Apr 20, 2000
This is a reprint of one of Spencer's "copy books." It is intended for use by those who already KNOW the Spencerian Penmanship and just want to practice it. It is NOT a teaching tool, but a practice tool ONLY. Please be sure you understand this or it will prove very disappointing. this site offers another title that is called something like "The Theory of Spencerian Penmanship" for one or two dollars more. THAT work was meant for home-study of this method and will satisfy many learners. HOWEVER, the best book on the subject was written by Michael Sull (1992-93) and don't know if it is available through this site. It is $15 and the definitive work on Spencerian penmanship.
Challenging, rewarding. Theory manual of historic interest. Mar 13, 1999
I enjoyed the nostalgic effort to teach myself penmanship again. Spencerian penmanship was developed to teach children of the pre-typewriter era an efficient, legible, and attractive business hand. It requires holding the fingers, hand, and arm differently than we do today, which I found challenging. However, you may skip this and simply practice copying the letters and morally improving phrases. You will find that in a few weeks your newly old-fashioned penmanship attracts interest and compliments.
